On March 5th 2010, there was great activity and excitement when over 200 secondary school students from across Westmeath competed in the 2010 Westmeath Student Enterprise Finals. Twenty-five projects had been short-listed for these annual awards that encourage students to develop a viable business idea.
The competition is open to all students from first years up to senior years, and there are 3 categories in the competition, Junior, Intermediate and Senior. The schools that reached the County Final were St. Josephs College, Summerhill, Athlone ; Loreto College, Mullingar ; Athlone Community College, Our Ladys Bower, Athlone ; Moate Community College; Mercy Secondary School, Kilbeggan ; St. Finians College, Mullingar and St. Marys CBS, Mullingar. The projects featured on the day contained the most innovative ideas the competition has ever seen - a definite sign that enterprise training and education is paying off in our local secondary schools.
On the competiton day, the students displayed their projects in the Golden Island Shopping Centre, Athlone where the winners were announced as follows :

This initiative is just one of a number of programmes that Westmeath County Enterprise Board Ltd. offer with the overall aim of stimulating an enterprise culture among young people. This competition, since its inception, has been very successful and will have long term benefits in helping Ireland’s youth to develop attitudes and skills for personal success and life-long learning and employability.
The competition is aimed at all second level students and contains Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories. The winners at county level go forward to the national level competition which takes place in May each year.
